Review - Shiver

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #1)

Shiver adalah kisah cinta antara Grace dan Sam. Manusia dan werewolf. Grace adalah seorang gadis yang suka menonton sekawanan serigala di hutan dekat rumahnya. Ia telah lama melihat Sam dalam wujud serigala sejak ia berusia 11 tahun, tetapi tidak pernah mengetahui bahwa Sam juga adalah manusia hingga ia berusia 17 tahun. Yang selalu diingat oleh gadis itu adalah mata Sam. Mata serigala yang kuning dan sedih. Sementara itu, Sam berada dalam 2 kehidupan. Sebagai manusia dan sebagai serigala. Pada musim panas, ia adalah manusia, dan pada musim dingin, ia adalah serigala. Sam tidak memiliki kemampuan untuk mengatur wujudnya sendiri, dan semakin hari, 'kemanusiaan'nya semakin pudar. Kemudian, kedua insan ini saling jatuh cinta. Sam berjuang mempertahankan kemanusiaannya, sedangkan Grace berjuang untuk mempertahankan Sam, meskipun berarti ia harus mengorbankan segalanya. 

Banyak orang berkomentar bahwa Shiver ditulis dengan prosa indah dan istilahnya, lyrical. Prosa yang digunakan penulis bukan prosa yang membuat jenuh, membosankan, atau bertele-tele, melainkan prosa yang emosional dan menyentuh. Kisahnya juga terjalin dengan indah. Stiefvater membiarkan pembacanya merasakan atmosfer cerita yang kuat dan sendu, merasakan emosi dan konflik luar-dalam tokoh-tokohnya yang naik turun seperti ombak, dan diakhiri dengan ending yang manis menyentuh dan memancing air mata. Menurut saya, Shiver adalah kisah cinta yang indah sekaligus sendu.  

Dalam versi yang saya baca ini, font buku ini berwarna biru (biru gelap yang kadang dapat terlihat sebagai hitam) dengan kertas putih (bukan yang terlalu putih sehingga membuat mata tidak nyaman membaca), yang justru mampu memperkuat kesan dari setting buku ini yang sebagian besar adalah pada musim dingin. 

Buku ini adalah buku pertama dari trilogi The Wolves of Mercy Falls. Kisah cinta Grace dan Sam masih terus berlanjut dalam Linger dan berakhir dalam Forever.

Review - The False Prince

Buku ini cocok buat mereka yang suka buku-buku Middle Grade/Teen (seperti Percy Jackson, dll), cocok juga buat mereka yang suka genre YA (Young Adult). 

Kisahnya tentang Sage, seorang yatim piatu, sekaligus seorang penduduk miskin yang pandai mencuri dan menipu. Suatu hari, ia dibeli dari pengurus panti asuhannya oleh seorang pria misterius, yang juga membawa 3 anak laki-laki lainnya dari panti asuhan lain. Sage menyadari bahwa mereka berempat memiliki kemiripan fisik. 

Ketika Sage menyadari bahwa mereka dikumpulkan untuk diseleksi menggantikan seorang pangeran kerajaan yang sudah lama hilang, ia sadar bahwa ia tidak akan bisa kembali ke kehidupannya sebagai anak jalanan. Pilihannya hanya 2, terpilih menjadi Prince Jaron, pangeran yang hilang 4 tahun lalu itu, atau mati dibunuh. Sage pun memutuskan untuk menjalankan permainan penuh tipu daya ini. 

Saya sangat suka tokoh Sage, seorang pembangkang dan yang paling sulit diatur (gampangnya, tipe anak bandel ^^). Entah berapa kali (dan berapa besar) dalam buku ini Sage mempermainkan para anggota kerajaan dengan kemampuannya dalam berakting, menipu, mencuri dan berbohong. Ada sedikit romance juga di sini antara Sage dan seorang gadis pelayan bernama Imogen, meskipun tidak kentara. 

Buku ini menggunakan 1st person PoV, yaitu dari Sage sendiri. Plotnya  terstruktur rapi dan tidak memberikan banyak petunjuk ke arah mana cerita akan berakhir. Endingnya juga memuaskan, meskipun bisa juga dikatakan agak termasuk 'cliff-hanger', karena dari ending disebutkan jelas bahwa masih ada konflik besar yang menanti. Dilihat dari ending, jelas buku ini memiliki sekuel (yang rencananya memang berupa trilogi).
